Let it grow, let it grow, greatly yield
The first official day of summer is approaching, even though the hot weather has already been here for some time. I don’t mind because I love the heat!
In my neighborhood, there is an area protected from development, where community residents can grow our own gardens. Stephen, WaterScapes’ restaurant manager, and I maintain six plots out there – although he has done most of the work over the past few months. Well done Stephen!
As I was watering the okra, squash and tomatoes yesterday, I began thinking back to when I was younger, when my family and I would head to a farm or pond to go fishing. We’d play a game to see if we could identify what was growing in the fields, passing rows and rows of tobacco, cotton, soybeans, corn, tomatoes and peppers.
For a time we lived in Michigan, and I remember passing by fields of sugar beets and cucumbers, which the locals called pickle fields, because the cucumbers were destined to become pickles.
I feel like you don’t see homegrown vegetables much anymore, so I took some pictures of some of the vegetables we’ve been growing in our garden.
